Each year on February 7th, Grenadians celebrate the anniversary of their independence, with national ceremonies and parades featuring the Royal Grenada Police Force, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and various schools. Independence day is a public holiday. Banks and most shops are closed. In 2008 Grenada celebrates its 34th Anniversary of Independence. |
| March 21st - Good Friday |
On Good Friday many christian churches in Grenada, commemorate the anniversary of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, with religious services marking Holy Week which start on Holy Thursday, continue thru Good Friday, and Easter Saturday, climaxing with the commemoration of the ressurection of Christ on Easter Sunday. Good Friday is a public holiday. Banks and most shops are closed. Good Friday will be celebrated on March 21st in 2008. |
| March 24 th - Easter Monday |
Considered to be the oldest feast of the Christian Church, Easter celebrations commemorate the death of Jesus Christ and the birth of the Catholic church. It is the principal feast of the ecclesiastical year and marks the start of the official calendar of the Catholic Church. Easter Monday is a public holiday. Banks and most shops are closed. Easter Monday will be celebrated on March 24th in 2008. |
| May 1st - Labour Day |
Each year the first day of May is celebrated in Grenada with parades and parties organised in honour of Grenada's workers. On this day, special attention is given to Workers' Rights, and many activities are organised by the Trade Unions. Labour Day is a public holiday. Banks and most shops are closed. |
May 12th - Whit Monday |
Whitsun is a feast of the universal Church which commemorates the Descent of the Holy Ghost upon the Apostles, fifty days after the Resurrection of Christ (Easter), on the ancient Jewish festival called the ""feast of weeks"" or Pentecost. In Grenada religious services are held on Whit Sunday, and an official holiday given on Whit Monday. Whit Monday is a public holiday. Banks and most shops are closed. Whit Monday will be celebrated on May 12th in 2008. |
| May 22nd - Corpus Christi |
Corpus Christi or the Feast of the Body of Christ, is celebrated in the Latin Church on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday to solemnly commemorate the institution of the Holy Eucharist. In Grenada, religious services are held. Corpus Christi is a public holiday. Banks and most shops are closed. In 2008 the feast of Corpus Christi will be celebrated on May 22. |
August 4th - Emancipation Day |
Emancipation Day is a public holiday celebrating the abolition of slavery. Although officially acknowledged worldwide as August 1st, in Grenada Emancipation Day is celebrated on the first Monday of August, with Cultural activities planned for both Grenada and Carriacou. Emmancipation Day is a public holiday. Banks and most shops are closed. Emancipation Day will be celebrated on August 4th in 2008. |
| August 11th - Carnival Monday |
From dawn on Carnival Monday, the streets of Grenada's towns are filled with traditional masqueraders depicting Devils (Jab-Jabs) and social commentaries of the highlights of the past year (Ole Mas). Spectators and masqueraders alike dance to the sounds of steelbands and DJs playing the latest carnival melodies. On Monday afternoon the fancy or pretty bands appear briefly on the streets. Later in the evening the Monday Night Mas bands make their way thorugh the streets from 8 pm onwards dancing and waving brightly coloured lights. Carnival Monday is a public holiday. | August 12th - Carnival Tuesday |
On Carnival Tuesday the fancy or pretty bands parade through the streets, with spectators and masqueraders alike dancing to the sounds of steelbands and DJs playing the latest carnival melodies. Carnival celebrations ends at midnight on Carnival Tuesday. Grenada's Carnival will celebrated on Tuesday on August 12th, 2008. |
October 25th - Thanksgiving Day |
Thanksgiving in Grenada is a public holiday commemorating the anniversary of the 1983 Caribbean and American military intervention in Grenada. On Oct 25th, a joint military force landed in Grenada to restore order to the country following the deaths of then Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and a number of his colleagues. Today, more than 25 years after the event, Grenada remains a peaceful society, welcoming visitors from North America and Europe on a daily basis. Thanksgiving in Grenada, is a public holiday. December 25th - Christmas Day |
Christmas Day in Grenada is marked by religious celebrations and an increased generousity of spirit wihtin the local population. Christmas traditions include the display of Nativity scenes and Christmas trees, the exchange of gifts and cards, and the arrival of Santa Claus at children's parties during the festive season. Christian churches celebrate with midnight services on Dec 24th. Christmas day is spent with friends and family, eating traditional foods. Malls and Stores open late into the evening on Christmas Eve (Dec 24), while restaurants offer special Christmas Day menus for both lunch and dinner. Christmas day is a public Holiday. Banks and most Business places are closed on this day. |

| December 26 the day after Christmas Day is celebrated as Boxing Day. Boxing Day is a public Holiday and is used by many to continue visiting friends and family in the spirit of the Christmas season. Banks and most Business places are closed on Boxing day. |
